High Point provides medication assisted treatment for our substance abuse clients who have been addicted to opiates, alcohol or other drugs. The on-site psychiatrist or APN will prescribe Vivitrol injections or Suboxone tablets or strips where appropriate and will have ongoing meetings with clients to manage their medications. They will meet with clients to determine how he or she is responding to the medication. These medications stabilize the client and ease the transition from addiction to recovery. Both Suboxone and Vivitrol are used in the treatment of opiate addiction and Vivitrol is also used in treating alcoholism. These medications are adjuncts to counseling and should not be considered cures in themselves.

Trauma Informed Care is a treatment framework that involves understanding, recognizing, and responding to the effects of all types of trauma and its impact on an individual. Trauma Informed Care also emphasizes physical, psychological and emotional safety for both consumers and providers, and helps clients rebuild a sense of control and empowerment. Being trauma-informed is vital because trauma survivors can be inadvertently re-traumatized by well-meaning caregivers and community service providers if they are not versed with this treatment.
Counselors use motivational interviewing as a client-centered tool to promote change by exploring and resolving a client’s ambivalence or resistance to that change. MI employs an empathetic style of interaction with the client, meaning counselors express acceptance towards the clients even if they are convinced the client’s behavior is harmful to the person or their loved ones. This acceptance should not be taken as condoning the behavior, and counselors will work to subtly move the client towards a change, achieved through change talk. Research shows that empathetic client-therapist relationships produce positive influence on the treatment outcome.
